Before urethane wheels, before kicktails, before grip tape, before Tony Hawk, and before X Games television broadcasts, there were simple wooden boards like this. The early 1960s skateboarding craze was born from California surfers looking for something to do when the waves were flat. Nicknamed ” sidewalk surfing, ” the sport exploded almost overnight, and companies like Nash rushed to produce affordable boards for department stores across America. These Tenderfoot models became many children’s first introduction to skateboarding. By modern standards they were wonderfully terrifying. The hard metal wheels offered almost no grip, transmitting every pebble directly into the rider’s feet. Cracks in the sidewalk became obstacles, and speed wobbles arrived almost instantly. Here we have a unique and vintage item up for grabs. Manufactured by Metal Masters Co, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the early 1960s this Vintage classic sidewalk skateboard model is the No. Measurements are 21.5 inches long 5 1/4″ at the nose and 4 3/4″ at the tail. The deck is 3/4 thick. Obviously this board shows wear. I have posted 11 photos please take a careful look at them. The original owner of this board seems to have written his name on the bottom of the deck in marker and is now well faded. The original red paint on the surfer and the logo can still be seen. It seems the child may have tried to color in the surfer’s trunks and the surfboard in black marker. All of the wheels move although rusty in appearance. You can still see the bright yellow metal wheel caps on the sides. The trucks look great. Wheels still flex side to side. You will not be disappointed with this wonderful item!
